Specimen notes
Public Note:
with possible anamorph and a Rhinotrichella hyperparasite (see 12472). Potential anamorph with a pale greenish/blue tinges, verticillium-like to 8x2um. Ascospores pale yellow length=19.0–25.5µm (µ=23.2, σ=1.74), width=4.0–5.5µm (µ=4.5, σ=0.47), Q=4.0–6.2µm (µ=5.20, σ=0.71), n=19). Subiculum orange, purple in KOH. Without perithecial hairs (altho basal subiculum is hairy), ascoma diameter 200-250um, walls 50-60um. This keys to H. aurantius but that has the well known Cladobotryum varius anamorph and no cladobotryum varium conidia were seen. The conidia here is verticillium-like and in fact identical to C. gracile described from Scytinostroma which is not known to have a teleomorph but which sequences indicate is closely related to H. aurantius. Perhaps this is the teleomorph? Or perhaps just an unrelated verticillium. [JAC Jul2012] Attempt to isolate associated Rhinotrichella produced C. varium so must assume this is H. aurantius. Attempt to isolate the Hypomyces itself produced slime aspergillus. Not kept. Sequence of the rhinotrichella came out as this.
