Specimen notes
Public Note:
asci bitunicate, fissitunicate, no apical apparatus, 1-septate, spores thick-walled, no paraphyses (basal), but with periphyses/periphysoids (i.e. in the ostiolar canal, or at least above asci and not reaching base). length=16.2-19.4µm (µ=18.1, σ=1.20), width=3.4-4.1µm (µ=3.7, σ=0.24), Q=4.6-5.6µm (µ=4.95, σ=0.33), n=8. Perithecia single, embedded, sometimes deep in host tissue. This is clearly a symbiont, and present in all samples collected. Really a Stigmidium? At time of writing the phylogenetic placement of genus uncertain. The report of this species of mangrove litter in India is surely an error! (Current Science, v87, 2004, p14321). My material wouldn't go into culture despite several attempts.
