Specimen notes
Public Note:
causing vein deformation and depressed lesions on leaf surface. Pycnia yellow, aecia white. Apparently only this and the Fuchsia rust are heteroecious on endemic hosts. Not recorded for Urtica ferox before - which is surprising. Local Carex is forsteri. From Zwetko: wall very finely echinulate but only a few with coarser warts, with numerous dehiscent granules (~2um and none 4-5um) A, spore colour white B, not sure what character 'cells arranged parallel to longitidinal axis of perdidium' means! Zwetko doesn't show images or drwaing of aecidia. This is consistent with urticata (granule size) except for colour! Australasian Plant Pathology (1999) 28: 131-138 McKenzie and Johnston mention P. caricina found a few times on Urtica spp (don't say which) in Central Otago and Manawatu. Known on U. aspera, australis and linearifolia, but not U. ferox.
