Specimen notes
Note:
This was always an unlikley record by the Freston's of Clavulina amethystina in NZ but was confirmed Irina Kautmanova. I cannot find a basis for this identification and I can only assume the collection was not examined microscopically. The material is 4-spored (although some 2-spored basidia are present) with small spores and they are very weakly roughened. Spores, including apiculus length=3.4-4.3µm (µ=3.8, σ=0.19), width=2.6-3.3µm (µ=2.8, σ=0.17), Q=1.1-1.5µm (µ=1.35, σ=0.10), n=20. The hyphae are clamped, and the basidia have basal clamps, which excludes C. zolingeri NZ. There is some skeletal tramal tissue dextrinoid, and spores with time show a dextrinoid reaction. This material conforms with Petersen's Ramariopsis sp 3, which itself seems to be a smooth-spored version of R. pulchella sensu Petersen NZ (i.e. ramarioid and without a distinct stipe). It is not Clavulina amtheystina, in any sense I'm aware of. Subsequent sequence confirms as a distinct taxon near Australian material of R. pulchella.
