Specimen notes
Public Note:
Annotation J. Fournier 12/2008: Difficult to tell if it matches the variety of not. Annotation M. Stadler 01/2009: Probably a new species. This has the same HPLC profile as the two varieties of D. dennisii but the ascospores are intermediate in size and different in shape. Cultures were initiated in order to evaluate whether it represents a new taxon.
Public Note:
Large stromata in very good conditon with solid interior and purplish pigments in KOH. Spores12.5-16 (-17.5) x 6-7 µm, much variable in size, some twisted. Anamorph in culture with short and broad conidiogenous cells with a strange branching pattern, perhaps assignable to Virgariella like, with conidia 6-6.5 x 3.5µm with a broadly truncate base.
J. Fournier, 12/2008
Public Note:
Stadler et al. 2014 "b) Another specimen collected in New Zealand: South Canterbury, Geraldine, Talbot Reserve, 29 Jan. 2006, P.R. Johnston (PDD 87953, cultures ICMP 18265, isolated by MS and ICMP 16408, isolated by the collector, n.v.) featured large stromata up to 60 mm diam, with compact interior (Fig. 23N) reminiscent of a member of the D. concentrica group, and purplish pigments in KOH. Its ascospores (Fig. 23P) measure 12.5–16(–17.5) × 6–7 µm, and are rather variable in size, sometimes twisted. The anamorph in culture and on stromata (Fig. 23O) revealed short and broad conidiogenous cells, 12–15 × 3.5–4 µm), with conidiogenous structures sporothrix-or virgariella-like, and ellipsoid conidia (6–6.5 × 3.5 µm) with a broadly truncate base. This fungus appears to be intermediate with respect to the discriminative characters of the teleomorph and can, therefore, not be assigned to one of the known varieties of D. dennisii. In addition, it clearly shows deviations with respect to its anamorphic morphology and might eventually be recognised as a separate taxon. The ITS nrDNA data (see below), however, are not significantly different from those of other taxa in this group.
