Specimen notes
Public Note:
cap smooth, greasy, pellucid striate. Gills strongly decurrent. Smell and taste faintly aromatic (of saffrole). Stem base enlarged. Spore print white. Tissue clamped. Cap cuticle with vesiculouse cystidia yellowing in Melzers and with clamp at base. Cap hyphae and septa refractive in fresh material. Spores strongly cyanophilous. Spores 4.8-5.7(5.1) SD0.4 n=5 x 3.2-3.5(3.3) SD0.1 n=5. The presence of 'cystidia' in the cap make this close to C. hydrogramma as noted by Egon and by Pegler. Gates and Ratkowsky note possible synonymy of C. clitocyboides with C. phaeopthalma (being Kuyper's unearthed name for C. hydrogramma). Egon notes that both NZ and Oz collection of C. c. have strong smell. However this collection did not, and did not have a strong taste - juts the reverse in fact. Bigelow notes at least one reported variety of hydrogramma with no smell. I think further collections needed before synonimising NZ C. clitocyboides with C. hydrogramma (=phaeothalma).
