Specimen notes
Public Note:
taste mild. Pores immediately grey/green, context white. Cut stem with red at base, becoming intensely blue/green. Spores with weak longitudinal striation (quite hard to see), boletoid, not truncate 11.5-14.4(13) SD1 x 4.5-5(4.7) SD0.2. Seems to have dextrinoid (not amyloid) hyphae in stem cortex (not particulalry thick-walled). Wouldn't say these look like 'pruinatus hyphae' as shown by Peintner Myc Res107 2003. X. badius in FM9(3) has punctate or smooth stem, and this is striate. Still X. badius is nearest. New record for NZ? Reported to MAF 2/07/2010. Loaned to Kunming March 2011. DNA says X. cisalpinus. Despite lack of obvious 'pruinatus' hyphae in stem base this seems reasonably well defined by cuticle structure and small width spores. #2 badius look-alike. Phylogenetically closest to X. c. sensu stricto
