Specimen notes
Public Note:
With abundant rhizomorphs (a horse-hair blight) from which fruitbodies arise and they are relatively short stemmed. Very androsaceus-like. The black rhizomorphs have occasional nodes which are random- not consistently v-shaped . Stem 1-1.5cm with caulocystidia along entire length but dominant at apex. Cap 2-3mm grey/cream and without fuscous papilla. Cheilocystidia and pleurocystidia not observered. Caulocystidia seem to be diverticulate cortical hyphae brown encrusted, and covered in agglutinated spores. Spores 10-10.6(10.3) SD0.2 n=6 x 4-5(4.7) SD0.4 n=4. Cap with hymenial sub-pellis but surface strongly siccus broom, stem not dextrinoid and trama not dextrinoid. European keys to quercophilus. C.f. M. aff. chiapensis, M. liquidamberi Mexico & PNG has fuscous umbo and non-attached rhizomorphs, M crinisequi in Australia also has dark umbo and longer stems - although some images on web of this fungus in australia do not show dark umbo and are probably something else. From described NZ taxa seems closest to M pallanticeps but there are still too many differences. Ron P indicates this is congeneric with M pallidocephalus and M. brevipes - Marasmius - Rhizomophigena. It sits within Omphalotaceaea and not Marasmiacea and section needs raising to genus.
