Specimen notes
Public Note:
Strigose mat of basal hairs/hyphae, spores non-septate, sigmoid, 50 x 4um, rounded at one end and tapered at the other. From Toni: "At least 3 possible candidates. Is the fruitbody wall purplish / reddish-purple in places in squash mount, or merely brown? Are the spores best described as sigmoid or geniculate? Is there a large (4-5 μm) subapical globule or an off-centre apology for one? Are there any appendages on any of the spores? - these can be incredibly difficult to see, and easy to miss unless one scrutinises quite a few spores. Main candidates are: L. "purpurea": fruitbody wall distinctly purple/red in squash mount. Spores c. 57 - 70 x 5 - 6 μm, geniculate rather than sigmoid, much narrower at basal end than apex but not pointed, not appendaged, becoming 4- 7-septate sometimes. Asci have large (4-5 μm) subapical globule. L. sp.: fruitbody wall brownish in squash mount, spores c. 55 x 5 μm, sigmoid, more sinuous than above, not quite as narrow at base, becoming 7-septate sometimes, not appendaged. Subapical globule small and oddly shaped and frequently off-centre in ascus, or some distance below apical ring. Fruitbodies possibly without basal hyphae however. L. "long-tail": fruitbody wall brown or yellow brown in squash mount. Spores c. 50 - 60 x 4 - 6 μm, plus appendages which are 18 - 22 μm long, at each end of spore. Appendages not visible on most spores, but distinct on a few. Spores more sigmoid than geniculate, and likewise less tapered at base than in "purpurea". Sometimes head cell swelling, spore becoming c. 5-septate, whole spore including tail becoming pale brown, and germinating from all cells at once. Asci have large (4-5 μm) subapical globule" Spores sigmoid, not geniculate, has odd-shaped off-centre subapical globule in asci and definitely no tails on spores. That makes it Toni's 'sp.' Globules show up well in cotton blue. Never noticed such things before
