Public Note:
Kauri, Kanuka, Leptospermum and coastal broadleaved trees; height: 6 cm; single specimen; pileus: 5.5 cm diam. with broad umbo,margin upturned and split (specimen overmature). When collected, deep greyish brownish, dark blue where cut or broken, drying out to pale fawn or yellowish ochre with fine radial fibrils of deep (prussian) blue or brown. Colour fading from centre outwards. Flesh whitish, skin blueing. Sour smell; stipe: 8 mm at gills, tapering downwards, extremely tough texture, whitish with velvety surface above (caulocystidia), rooting slim base covered with white cotton wool. Outer flesh tough, brownish, blueing near the top, inner flesh white and soon collapsing to leave hollow centre. Inner flesh not cobwebby - much more like a tough spider egg-case. Blueing surface where handled; gills: sinuate, slightly adnate, rubbery and tough in texture, dull brownish with conspicuous white margin, deep,long and short; spore: print not obtained. Smooth with germ pore, brownish yellow in KOH and Melzers 6-7 (8) x 4 (5) µm may have been immature, basidia 10-20 x 6-8 µm 4 spored, subhymenium a few very slim hyphae // hymenial surface, trama wide and'cellular', hyphae 2 x long as wide
