N. solandri forest, with many Rimu, Miro, Totara, Kamahi mixed in; singly, height 6.5 cm; pileus: 2 cm diam. but possibly not expanded fully. Central disc dark brown velvety, almost furry, scales elsewhere reddish brown with cracks between showing white, smaller scales with a central patch of dark fur. Flesh white. Margin with large torn star like "rays" hanging down, white with a few sparse brown dots; stipe: 3 mm at gills, tapered upwards, flesh white and fibrous with centre hollow. Smooth above veil attachment, around the torn veil region are cobwebby white hyphae joining the veil patches to the stipe. Cobwebby scales increase in abundance towards the base of the stipe and change from delicate pink through to brown. Copious white rhizomorphs from the base; gills: free, creamy white, long and short, crowded; spores: print white.
