Lawn; pileus: up to 9 cm diam. when mature and flattened. Convex with margin rolled under, becoming plano convex, sometimes irregular. Smooth white when young, later overlaid by minute concentrically arranged fibrils, brownish or fawn-grey, darkest at centre, paler and further apart towards margin. Margin tending to split. Flesh whitish, distinct from stipe, fairly thin. Margin exceeds gills, curls up as a protective membrane; stipe: 13 mm x 8 cm. Tapered upwards, whitish, faintly fibrillose. Flesh white, fibrous - stringy, more tenuous in centre, rubescent (faintly) above when first cut, more apricot flushed at base (faintly). Base wider but hardly bulbous, base solid, and with white surface "fur". White rhizomorphs. Ring superior, whtie or tinged with ochre. Outer 2/3 thin and tenuous, with some thicker patches on lower surface which get pulled further and further apart, becoming arachnoid then collapsing. Inner 1/3 white and membranous, persisting as a ring with stellate or fimbriate edge; gills: free, shallow, crowded, pinkish when young but soon becoming greyish. Long and short. Spores print purple-brown.
