Specimen notes
Public Note:
pilipellis a cutis with swollen cells constricted at septa 150um x 50um, no clamps , grey/brown in melzers, pigment intra-cellular. Cap appearing tacky when wet and slightly micaceous when dry due to large cells. Smell radishy, stem matt, covered in cystidia towards apex. No gelatinous edge to gill, concolourous. Colourless juice in stem. Cap with unornamented surface hyphae. Caulocystidia antler-like with branching clubs. Gill trama dextrinoid, 4-spored, spores thin-walled amyloid length=7.7–9.5µm (µ=8.7, σ=0.6), width=4.8–6.3µm (µ=5.7, σ=0.6), Q=1.4–1.7µm (µ=1.5, σ=0.1). Sterigmata long to 10um. Basidia and cystidia with yellow oily content in Melzer's. Cheilocystidia broad to 13um and with few blunt fingers/stumps and covered in granulose substance(or very small broom cells?). Base of stem with strigose mycelium. Grgurinovich doesn't key. Cap to 2cm, stem 2mm to 8cm. Re-eaxmined 14/2/2009 - can't find evidence of cystidia, cap hyphae unornamented. There appear to be large brown vesicles in the gill trama. It should be noted that M. helminthobasis is described as centrally umbilicate and witha double gelatinous layer in cap. Some web images of M. h. with a conical brown stripy cap seem unlikely given this description.
