paler zones nearly white, pithy. No KOH extractable pigments. Spores to 17um long. Note that NZFUNGI description has 'purple KOH extracts' but http://mycology.sinica.edu.tw/Xylariaceae/frames.asp?qrySectionName=Daldinia&qryIDString=d013&qryPart=t&qryCharacter=24 has also without. Large spore size separates, say from escholtziae.
