Specimen notes
Public Note:
Spores 6.3-8.5(7.4)x2.5-3.3(2.9). Peridium vinaceous buff with rose discolouration, 1.5-3cm diam. This collection agrees with Pegler British Truffles, R. roselus which synonimizes R. roseolus and R. rubescens. Beaton et al, Victoria State, 1985, mention confusion on names, as does Cunningham. Not sure about accepting this synonymy. Apparently Lange separates two on basis of roseolus spores 8-10.5x3.5-4.5 rubescens 6.7-9.5x2.6-3.2. Miller's use (Mycotaxon 27) encompasses both, as does Pegler. Smith has numerous NA taxa in this group and distinguishes roseolus with no yellow colours from rubescens with them. My gut feeling is that too narrow a concept has been applied and these are all roseolus (the earliest name) [Oct 2012 - I was wrong - see other records]. To Walbert
