Specimen notes
Public Note:
Cap 7cm deeply cracked and scaly. Stem 1.5x7 with distinct bulb. Orange/red when freshly cut but browning rapidly. Gills with balloon shaped cheilocystidia. Notes added March 08: ring is distinctly double with both components fimbriate and no distinct felty patch. Gill edge brown. No clamps seen in cap tissue. Spores 9-11.2(9.9)x6.2-7.1(6.5), Q1.41-1.53(1.63) distincty truncate at one end. Not clear if brown cap surface is hymeniderm or not. Bulb is marginate. Underside of ring is brown - but not a felty patch. = rachodes. The distinguishing features of brunneum (=var. bohemica) according to Vellinga are: marginate bulb, simple ring with brown felty 'patch' underneath, presence of clamps at basidia and cheilocystidia base (cheilocystidia differences to rachodes seem slim to me) 26.9-34.3(30.5)x11-12.6(11.7), Q=21.3-3.06(2.61). I keep finding things with mixtures of these characters. Maybe I have yet to see the real brunneum? But I don't think this fits.
