Public Note:
A. howeana may be considered a North American version of A. praecox. Watling differentiated the two in his NZ revision by Pleurocystidia mucronate to ampulliform in A. praecox (spores 8.5 x 5.5) and Pleurocystidia inflated utriform to vesiculose in A. howeana (spores 9 x 6.5) but all variations seem to exist in material examined. A. howeana is said to be bitter but that field character is missing in the NZ collections. Given the reasonable sequence invariance in NZ and other A. praecox it seems sensible to re-assign these A. howeana collections there.
