Specimen notes
Public Note:
19-35 mm high, 10-24 mm across at crown, tough, tips/branches flattened, no odor, taste extreamly bitter. \ Habitat: Scattered from moss and soil under tree ferns, in mixed broadleaf-podocarp forest. [JAC:20/06/2023] S. hiscens was described from South Carolina and the NZ use of the name is suspect. This collection has large buckle-clamps, gloeocystidia absent, spores thick walled 6 x 4.8. Basidia not seen but spore distribution suggests 2-3 spored. The clamps are more like Reid's depiction of S. mussooriensis. Reid mentions hiscens for NZ and refers to Cunningham's 1965 account of Stereum in which he believes S. puseolum is a misidentification of S. hiscens. He also mentions a collection of Stereopsis elegans which he believed was also a misidentification of S. hiscens, and Dingley (PDD 12614, 12615). [JAC:7/08/2023] sequence data places this away from other S. hiscens and in the Gomphales near Clavariadelphus. Note the type of Stereopsis is S. radicans but the recent paper on the phylogenetics does not mention S. hiscens. The only sequences of S. hiscens are iNat USA and none look like our concept of S. hiscens. I suspect they are correct. Reid's NZ use refers to Cunningham's Stereum puseolum, which does seem like the modern NZ concept (from the photo) and perhaps not so much like a Cotylidia (the current interpretation of S. puseolum). I think tis is a gen nov. in the Gomphales near Clavariadelphus and is also present in the US (iNat sequences again). This need other loci.
