Specimen notes
Public Note:
Capillitium calvatia type, spores verrucose, without pedicel. iNat commentary: This white top-shaped, medium sized puffball with an olive spore mass gets called various things in New Zealand, usually C. candida or C. craniformis, neither of which is really present. The outer surface varies according to maturity and weather conditions. In this group there is the much bigger Calvatia/Langermannia gigantea which is globose, the lilac-spored C. lilacina (not C. excipuliformis or fragilis), and perhaps the yellow/red staining C. rugosa. The correct name for this species may become Calvatia retis based on the Australian Lycoperdon retis.
