[NS] Scattered on soil bank in mixed broadleaf forest. Cap 162-209 mm across, thinly viscid when wet, velvety when dry, wrinkled and bumpy on younger specimen, margin thinly inrolled, stipe 111-138 mm long, 51-57 mm thick at apex, nearly equal to bulbous (60-73 mm thick at base), furrowed and grooved lower, pinched, and abruptly truncate at base. pores round to slightly angular, pore walls thick when young, thin when mature, 4-5 per 2 mm when young, 1.5-2 per 2 mm when mature, edges slightly marginate, tubes 5-11 mm long, olive. Flesh thick, very firm when young in cap, softer in age, stipe firm, with softer base when young, becoming quite soft and squishy (like foam rubber), dingy mustard yellow, marbled with brownish around edges, to yellowish brown in stipe base, slight bluing when cut, more pronounced with damaged too, then slowly slight brownish discoloration, odor with sharp bitterness? taste indistinct to muddy. KOh appearing black on cap, dark vinaceous brown on wipe test on cap, deep red brown on pores, slight brownish on flesh, orange brown on tubes.
