[NS] Scattered and in small loose clusters under beech .Cap 49-158 mm across, dry, scaly, gills grayish, to tan, with paler edges, stipe 107-129 mm long, 9-33 mm thick, lower portion with scales in bands, flesh firm in cap, stipe softer , more grainy core, with tough, rind-like skin, no odor, taste indistinct, KOH dark brown on cap and stipe, slight brownish on flesh.
