Public Note:
[NS]scattered in troop, some in pairs or small clusters in duff under beech. Cap 43-183 mm across, convex with an inrolled margin when young, margin lobed and undulating, and mostly staying downcurved in age, surface dry, glabrous to finely fibrillose, areolate cracking in areas, violet with darker purplish-black over disc on some, unexposed caps pallid, or with whitish blotches, slight orangish staining around margins. Gills adnate to narrowly adnexed, with a short decurrent tooth, crowded, occasionally forking, or intervined, 3-9 mm broad, cream colored, paler towards edges, edges ever to irregular. Stipe 45-96 mm long, 16-33 mm thick at apex, more or less equal, or tapered at base, very firm, tough, dense, base with tufts of binding mycelium, surface dry, finely tomentose, breaking into chevrons, violet, with narrow pallid band at very apex, base paler, whitish, developing orang stains on lower portion. Flesh thick, firm, 12-20 mm thick at disc, off-white t pale cream, slight discoloration when cut. Odor strong, rancid to rancid farinaceous, taste sweet!, then farinaceous after 20 secs.
