Specimen notes
Public Note:
[WMD] This group of mushrooms was growing in a scattered group on the forest floor. The cap is cream with a fibrous surface and no scales and grows about 4 to 9 cm in diameter. The gills are very pink in the field and become free as the fruit body expands. Once picked the gills quickly turn a greyish-light brown colour eventually turning dark brown. The spores appear pink on the stipe of fruit bodies in the field but are mid-brown when collected as a spore-print and appear brown when looked at under the microscope. There is a veil forming a distinct but short-lived ring on the stipe. The flesh is cream and does not discolor when cut or bruised. Remnant mature coastal broadleaf forest. Images 5 & 6 are from Feb 7 2016 at the same location. Unclear if cheilocystidia present or not. Spores about 8.3 x 5.2 micron. Flesh did not discolor when bruised even on addition of KOH. [ChristianSchwarz] The ragged/weak veil and felty sterile margin on this fruitbody would be very unusual for anything we call A. californicus here in Santa Cruz Co. (I believe the type specimens are from here). [JAC] KOH-ve, AA+ve, ring intermediate, cap margin not stuffed, spores 7-8x4-5, cheilos present, chained. Nothing I have so far has this combination. We'll see where it comes out.
