A sequence of this collection, and PDD 108470 last year, show that the NZ taxon is distinct from H. coralloides sensu Europe and is the same as an un-named species from South America (JQ16934). I can find no potential name by Spegazzini for South America, or by Cooke et al for Australia. No candidates are lsited by Donk/Geesteranus 1959 other than Cunningham's assertion of Hynum novaezelandiae Colenso as a synonym. The earliest name for the NZ taxon, when recognised as a distinct species, is therefore Colenso's Hydnum novaezelandiae which requires a transfer to Hericium. The type material at Kew requires examination to ensure the morphology is consistent with rcent sequenced colections.
