Two Lachnum spp. from Juncus having apothecia with a yellow hymenium and white or pale yellowish receptacle and hairs, have been sequenced. Phylogenetically they are quite distant within Lachnum, and the two species differ in ascospore size and also in the arrangement of the wall thickening at the ascus apex (see images attached to the specimens). PDD 108737 (D2396) has ascospores about 40 x 2 um and perhaps represents L. apalum sensu Spooner p. 661; PDD 108742 (D2397) has ascospores about 45-58(-65) x 2 um and morphologically seems closer to the Australian taxon L. apalum var. beatonii. In some cases the same Leotiomycetes species, with identical ITS sequences, occurs on the same substrate in both New Zealand and Australia, but often specimens from the two countries represent genetically slightly distinct sister species. There is no DNA sequence data available from a Lachnum apalum like specimen from Juncus from Australia so it is not possible to check in this case.
