Specimen notes
Public Note:
Surely not P. gigantea (no mention of purple in descriptions of this fungus). The purple colour matches images of P. crassa but the DNA sequence is a little bit different. NZFungi reports P. crassa from lots of NZ collections (under the name Hjortstamia crassa), including many from native forest. Cunningham mentions the pruple colour in his description of NZ material. Your ITS matches exactly a sequence from a Barbara Paulus specimen from native forest (TTT484). Perhaps what we have on the table downstairs is an undescribed native fungus that is genetically close to P. crassa?? But it is also found in Portugal (based on the matching Genbank accessions). Morphology is needed to decide whether there might indeed be two purple P. crassa-like fungi, and whether the NZ and Portuguese fungi are really the same, and how the NZ native forests - Portugal link might be explained.
