Specimen notes
Public Note:
[GS]Two bolete mushrooms, with caps measuring 45 and 30 mm across, growing on soil beneath Pinus radiata. The pore surface was bright yellow in the larger specimen but only faintly yellow in the small specimen, possibly because the smaller cap was partly dislodged when found. The cap surfaces were wrinkled but quite firm, and had a reddish colour, especially in the depressions. The cap margins were yellowish-brown. The short stems were white with some yellowing on the upper part. Slicing the cap in half revealed some red colouration below the surface with the rest of the context being white initially, before turning slightly blue. The stem and pores also showed some bluing when damaged. [JAC] The pileipellis structure looks like Xerocomellus although there is very little encrustation. The spores are non-striate, with rounded ends. There are no congophilous plaques on the pileipellis hyphae and no amyloid thick-walled hyphae in the stipe. The cap does not change colour with NH4OH. That doesn't get me anywhere with the species on which I have information. Sequence says Hortiboletus near H. rubellus. LSU says near Hortiboletus bubalinus. That with Tilia/Populus
