field photo. Classic form. Sequences indicate 3 species in Au/NZ, this one with plates, shared with Australia, and Australia only form, and a spindly NZ only form. Reid separated tristis by caps not having a base and stem running through them, versus var. pusio with distinct bases, and Australian. He also used colour fawn versus ornage/ pink, which turns out not to be a good character, as pointed out by Buyck. Podosperpula mirandina from New Caledonia appears to be a synonym of var. tristis but has no sequence. 1. pilei flat, bracket like - 2. 1' Pilei cylindrical to compressed/flattended - P. pusio var. pusio CF. (NZ only). 2. pieli with narrowed base attached laterally to main stipe - P. pusio var. pusio (AU). 2' pilei without narrowed base and piecred by main stipe - P. pusio var. tristis.
