Specimen notes
Public Note:
chasmothecia to 100um. 3-5 asci. Asci 6 spored (some verrucose when immature). Appendages present, numerous, mycelioid, basal, septate, unbranching, thick walled, to 300um, 7um thick, partially verrucose, often sinuous, brown at base (in KOH and water). Chasmothecia wall thick. Apressoria lobed.Ascospores maturing on leaf (in current season?), to 20um long. Conidia single (very few seen, and not on condiophore - with fibrosin?). Erysiphe section Erysiphe. This fits with E. epimeddi var. brunnea, the only species in section Erysiphe recorded on berberidaceae, and otherwise known only from the type collections (on E. brevicornu). Host identity confirmed by CHR (Bill Sykes). Probably subsp. colchicum. This is a surprising addition (in that it has chasmothecia, and so should have been here for a while). The evidence suggest this is E. epimedii var. brunnea, and is a synonym of E. aquilegiae, and that it is capable of infecting hosts outside the ranunculaceae. Note that E. aquilegiae var. ranunculi has chamothecia recorded in NZ and var. aquilegiae does not. Material infected with ampellomyces. LSU/ITS suggest this is E. aquilegiae and the morphology fits.
