Pileus 3-12 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, black to very dark brown, subvelutinous, becoming finely areolate, with a sterile flap at margin when young, less conspicuous with age. Tubes white with grayish rose to light purple, to grayish ruby (12E 6,5) pores when young, vinaceous pink with age, staining brown. Stipe 6.5-13 cm long, 1-3 cm broad, finely matted becoming fibrillose streaked, deep purple brown to graysih ruby to grayish rose, white at base.
