Supplementary remarks:
In most cases the rachillas have been modified and the hook replaced by a bract subtending a ♂ flower. In some instances there is a further growth of the rachilla to produce a second bract which in all cases examined is sterile. The rounded shoulder where the hook turns down, appears to be morphologically a node.
