Need flowers to be 100% sure, but the specimen has small glands immersed in the leaf that are clearly visible on the back of the leaf which is typical for Rhododendron ponticum. The capsules are not aborted and look like they will have developed seeds.
There is a chance that this is a cultivar with “Ponticum” parentage: The leaves a flat or only slightly curved downwards but not consistently (flat or curved upwards in R. ponticum); the pedicels are longer than 3 cm (shorter in R. ponticum).

Amall population of c. 20 scattered plants on an open stony slope on the east side of a small spur, within open kanuka scrub/low-forest, and adjacent to beech forest.
