Habitat:
An individual plant (bifurcating form) which had volunteered on a hill-side in a small light-well between kanuka trees. The balance of the hillslope is dominated by kanuka. Shallow free-draining loess soil over a sandstone base. The soils overlie a lens of porous infertile quartz sandstone allied to the nearby Mount Ararat crag.
Microhabitat:
Canopy of almost pure kanuka (Kunzea sp. approaching the K. robusta form), with a sparse understorey dominated by Leucopogon fasciculatus and Coprosma rhamnoides over a sparse groundcover of Dichondra repens, Asplenium flabellifolium, Agrostis capillaris, scattered Dactylis glomerata and extensive areas of kanuka leaf litter.
