Supplementary remarks:
Until the early 19th century, this place was the site of a tremendous waterfall. The stream concerned now flows underground from a point just south of Malham Tarn to emerge, not at the foot of the cliffs, but at Aire Head Springs, south of Malham village. This has left a dry valley (Watlowes) running from the Water Sinks to an expanse of limestone pavement at the head of Malham Cove.
