Notes:
Canadian pondweed or black weed, is very common in clear slow-running streams in Auckland & Canterbury; The long trailing stems look almost black as they cloth the bottom of the streams. Only female plants are found in Europe, so that all reproduction is vegetative, by the transplanting of broken-off stems. The same is probably true here also.

Herbarium history:
This collection is part of a collection given to the Allan Herbarium via Laurence Smith (Amberly office, Environment Canterbury). This was given to L. Smith in the early 1990's by someone in Port Robinson, Cheviot. The collection is believed to have been collected in 1948, based on several specimens with fully written dates in the collection.
