Habitat:
Sheep/beef farm. Edge of lucerne paddock - scattered clumps on surrounding hillsides. Horehound present 50+ - became more widespread since move to sheep farming ??
Microhabitat:
Horehound along fence line - lucerne paddock/wetland/cattle grazed. 10 mins from house on farm track.
Notes:
Biocontrol: Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) Invertebrate and Pathogen Survey 2017-2018.Property owner Warwick Lissaman is agreeable for release of BC agents.Abundance: Moderate (>100 m² ). Percent of cover at densest accessible point: 50%. Visual inspection for herbivore damage: 1% aerial plant parts - 2 notched leaves; root damage - none. Pathogens: collected/photographed - 'Yellow spot' - maybe leaf hopper feeding damage? Plant parts affected: leaves. Level of impacts: very low. Absence of wilt symptoms: very 'lush' site. Horehound layers readily from lower stems. Cause of damage: 2x large brown caterpillars, 1 small caterpillar beaten from plants; no obvious feeding damage. Burr clumps collected. Many bumble bees working flowers. Limited second flowering? Many insects collected likely from lucerne: weevilsx 2-3 spp?, pentatomids x 2 spp., parasitoids x 3, many leaf hoppers, some spiders.
