Habitat:
Growing on a perched riparian terrace alongside the river, centred around a damp depression subject to shallow puddling. Occurring as a lower tier under a fragmented podocarp-hardwood forest canopy. Physically protected from livestock by fencing and legally protected by way of Ngaroma Scenic Reserve. Subject to browsing by feral red deer and occasional disturbances by feral pigs. Associated species: The local canopy is dominated by Fuscospora solandri, Elaeocarpus hookerianus and Kunzea robusta, with occasional emergent Dacrycarpus dacrydioides and Prumnopitys taxifolia. The understorey supports Pseudopanax ferox and Coprosma crassifolia (both generally on surrounding drier surfaces), Coprosma obconica, Coprosma rigida, Coprosma rhamnoides, Lophomyrtus obcordata and Myrsine divaricata. The groundcover is dominated by extensive mosses, occasional ferns (especially Blechnum penna-marina)over litter and bare ground.Substrate: Deep alluvial soils and loess routinely augmented by wind-blown grit from the braided bed of the adjacent Conway River. Adjacent to a small meandering stream draining nearby hillslopes. Overlies greywacke rock.
Notes:
At least 20 plants were found, as a discrete cluster. This population of Coprosma pedicellata is sympatric with Coprosma obconica, and is very close to populations of other species of interest including Pseudopanax ferox.Coprosma pedicellata plants occurred as healthy shrubs and small trees up to c. 9 m tall, but with little sign of recent recruitment.Collected with The Canterbury Botanical Society.
