Habitat:
Growing on the upper slopes of a north-facing riparian scarp alongside the river, on hot dry ground under a highly fragmented (environmentally exposed) kanuka canopy (otherwise with a predominantly exotic broom understorey). Physically protected from livestock by fencing and legally protected by way of Ngaroma Scenic Reserve. Subject to browsing by feral red deer and occasional disturbances by feral pigs. Associated species: The local canopy is dominated by scattered Kunzea robusta with occasional Olearia paniculata and Fuscospora solandri. The understorey supports scattered Helichrysum lanceolatum, Coprosma rhamnoides Coprosma crassifolia and locally dominant Cytisus scoparius. The groundcover is dominated by exotic grasses including Dactylis glomerata.Substrate: Crumbling stony alluvial soils and loess routinely augmented by wind-blown grit from the braided bed of the adjacent Conway River, or by debris from above. Overlies greywacke rock.
Notes:
Three plants were found, though the habitat provides opportunity for many more. This population is potentially more extensive than the observation indicates. Collected with The Canterbury Botanical Society.
