Habitat:
Growing as a scattered population of plants on or near the edge of a perched riparian terrace alongside the river, most dominant along drier ground under a fragmented kanuka canopy along the top of a north-facing riparian scarp, but also occurring back from the scarp edge on damper ground under podocarp-hardwood forest. Physically protected from livestock by fencing and legally protected by way of Ngaroma Scenic Reserve. Subject to browsing by feral red deer and occasional disturbances by feral pigs. The local canopies are dominated by almost pure Kunzea robusta (along the drier, warmer terrace edge), and by Fuscospora solandri, Elaeocarpus hookerianus and Kunzea robusta, with occasional emergent Dacrycarpus dacrydioides and Prumnopitys taxifolia (on the terrace, further back from the edge). The understorey supports Pseudopanax ferox, Helichrysum lanceolatum, Coprosma rigida, Coprosma rhamnoides and Coprosma crassifolia (generally on drier stony terrace-edge surfaces), and by Coprosma rigida, Lophomyrtus obcordata and Myrsine divaricata (on damper, deeper soils back from the terrace edge). The groundcover of the terrace edge is dominated by extensive mosses, occasional ferns and sedges, and Brachypodium sylvaticum, the groundcover of the damper sites supports occasional ferns (especially Blechnum penna-marina)over litter and bare ground.Substrate: Stoney to deep alluvial soils and loess are routinely augmented by wind-blown grit from the braided bed of the adjacent Conway River. Overlies greywacke rock.
Notes:
At least 100 specimens were found, scattered over several hectares. This population of Coprosma obconica is locally sympatric with Coprosma pedicellata and Pseudopanax ferox. Coprosma obconica plants occurred as healthy shrubs up to c. 2 m tall, with occasional sign of recent recruitment. Collected with The Canterbury Botanical Society.
