Supplementary remarks:
Ana Podolyan has generated some spotless ITS sequences for Colin's collection. Comparing them with GenBank sequences I think they are a good match for Stellaria pallida. There are a couple of provisos. First there are some sequences in GenBank as S. media that are at least as good a match. However, these are from sources I would not consider reliable (barcoders not Caryophyllaceae researchers). After these the best Blast matches (in order of sequence identity to the sample) are S. pallida, S. neglecta, S. chinensis, S. media (from reputable sources). The first three of these are all much of a muchness, but there is a drop off in similarity to the reliable S. media sequences. Since Colin's plant does not fit S. neglecta or S. chinensis that's probably a pretty strong result. So my suspicion and Peter Heenan's more considered opinion, and the sequences all agree it is probably Stellaria pallida. A New species for New Zealand.
