Clump-forming, stemless herb. Leaves ± erect, to c. 1 m high with lamina 40-50 x 30-35 cm, tending bullate, dark glossy green above, glossy purple-green beneath, with rounded basal lobes; petiole shining purple-brown with deep channel and prominent wing. peduncle much < petiole (to c. 30 cm), purplish-pink. Basal sheath pinkish-white. Inflorescence musty smelling but not unpleasant. Spathe c. 19 x 6 cm, whitish inside, very pale grey and pink outside, apparently remaining convex except for basal 3-4 cm. Spadix c. 17 cm long; female part c. 2 cm long; sterile neck above c. 1 cm long; male part c. 2.5 cm long; appendage 10.5-11.5 cm long, cream. tapering distally. Relic of cultivation.
