Habitat:
Growing as loose mats in moderate shade under forest and tall scrub, strongly dominated by tree-sized Coprosma virescens. Secondary canopy of Coprosma virescens, Mysine divaricata, and Passiflora tetrandra, among ground cover of Montia perfoliata and mosses. Scattered Podocarpus totara and Prumnopitys taxifolia indicate that the former cover would have been dominated by dryland podocarp-hardwood forest. Site protection: Physically protected from livestock by fencing. Substrate: Mapped as Akaroa yellow-brown earth soils, near occasional volcanic rock outcrops, near the crest of a broad leading spur.
Notes:
Population size: Two specimens found, each a sprawling loose mat of about 50 cm diameter. This site was not closely checked, and further specimens could well occur at this location, and on similar sites nearby.
