Habitat:
Growing on edge of bulldozed track through secondary kamahi-broadleaf forest.
Notes:
Track used decades ago for moving cattle and has recently been reopened, so potentially the tree may have been planted. Tree slightly taller than surrounding vegetation, c. 12 m. One parent tree, a few saplings and hundreds of small seedlings present. Seedlings appear to be confined to < 20 m of parent tree and are more abundant on track edge with greater light levels. Seedlings maybe a recent reponse to increased light due to reopening of track.A medium sized tree, shows signs of epicormic shoots (mostly browsed off by deer). Bark pink-pale brown and flakes off to reveal white underneath. Flowers white with 4 petals and lots of anthers, flower c. 1 cm across. Flowering profusely. Seedlings show fibrous root system.
