Altitudes:
from 200m
Habitat:
Growing as sprawling plants along the toe-slope of a deeply incised canyon, in moderate shade under secondary kanuka forest. The canopy is dominated by Kunzea robusta, with an understorey of Melicytus ramiflorus, Coprosma crassifolia, Leucopogon fasciculatus, Coprosma rhamnoides and occasional young Pseudopanax arboreus volunteers. The goundcover is dominated by mosses, occasional ferns (especially Asplenium flabellifolium) over litter and bare ground.Substrate: Growing on a toe-slope in friable sandy soils derived from (below) an exposed north-west-facing scarp of quartz-sandstone. The site (LeftSingleQuoteSmothering GullyRightSingleQuote) receives fresh wind-blown or water-washed gritty material from above on a regular basis.
Notes:
Physically protected from livestock by fencing and legally protected by way of a QEII covenant. The habitat of this population of Carex raoulii had been subject to occasional livestock pressure until 2011, and it and many associated species are now volunteering freely. At least 10 specimens of Carex raoulii were found, each being a sprawling leafy tuft with long culms sprawling well beyond the leaves.
