This specimen matches what botanists accept as Celmisia discolor. The similar C. incana and C. allani are occ. grouped (ie NZPCN) and distinguished from this species on the basis of larger leaf size and white tomentose upper lamina.
Celmisia in New Zealand is in urgent need of a critical revision.

Notes:
DOC Tier 1 and MfE LUCAS Programme Plot: BE118; Sample Number: 20131171. I keyed this out to CELdis in Flora V 1. Plus, this is what I called CELdis in my thesis (Gosden 2012 unpublished MSc thesis, University of Canterbury). But many people refer to this as CELinc (which I think is much more tomentose on top) - so I'm curious as to what it is?
