Habitat:
Dense forest on old course of Whanganui River; swamp forest, periodically flooded. Light gap in canopy. Scattered Alectryon excelsus.

Notes:
1 m tall shrub with damaged "leader" (windfall > 1 year ago?). Only 2 new shoots off stem. Cross section shows 10 or more rings? Leaves glossy bright green, aromatic; simple with obscure dentitions on distal ½; articulated and winged petioles. A single axillary spine in each axil. Stem borer present.
