Habitat:
Several hundred plants of this kowhai occur, mature plants being up to c. 5 m tall (often less), forming near-continuous low forest along a pair of limestone ridges. Was found growing as forest or treeland (possibily depending on the degree of site disturbance as well as substrate), over hard limestone rock (often exposed, with rendzina soils in depressions and flatter areas), on hill-slopes otherwise dominated by secondary shrubland and tussockland grazed by sheep and cattle. The density is greatest on hard rocky substrates along the ridges, becoming more scattered on less rocky substrates off the ridges.
Microhabitat:
The trees frequently formed a continuous canopy though several native creepers (especially Parsonsia capsularis var. capsularis, P. capsularis var. rosea, Clematis afoliata, Rubus squarrosus and Scandia geniculata) were often prominent up into the canopy. Where space allowed other species included Aristotelia fruticosa, Coprosma propinqua, Hebe traversii, Melicytus aff. alpinus and Sophora prostrata (with which the Sophora longicarinata occasionally hybridised), over Poa cita, red fescue (Festuca rubra), over Asplenium trichomanes and Cystopteris tasmanica. The woody exotics Crataegus monogyna and Ribes uva-crispa were becoming locally abundant. Both the S. longicarinata and Coprosma species hosted the pygmy mistletoe Korthalsella clavata.
Notes:
The recruiting juvenile plants had no interfacing habit or yellowing of twigs, instead growing as erect plants from the outset. Leaflets appeared to be smaller and more numerous than that of most Sophora microphylla populations in the region. The plants had virtually finished flowering, thus had green developing pods (plus last years pods). There was evidence of recuitment.
