Type:
Type of Braunia novae-seelandiae Beckett, Trans. & Proc. New Zealand Inst. 26: 275 (1894)
Type:
Type material of Braunia novae-seelandiae Müll.Hal. ex Beckett, Trans. N. Z. Inst. 26: 275 (1893) This is a mixture of apparently sterile Hedwigidium integrifolium and Hedwigia ciliata. My examination suggests that only the Hedwigia is fruiting. I have not seen any of the "very numerous perigonia" mentioned in the protologue attached to plants of Hedwigidium integrifolium. All the perichaetia and capsules I have looked at have ciliate leaves and belong to Hedwigia ciliata. I am happy to consider Braunia novae-seelandiae a synonym of Hedwigidium integrifolium (H. imberbe) as did Dixon (1927) p. 240), provided the fruiting plants of Hedwigia ciliata are excluded from the concept. Beckett recognised the heterogeneity of this collection.
