Habitat:
In montane shrubland on branchlets of Olearia arborescens growing in amongst Frullania sp (AWK 947). Other bryophyte, lichen, and fern species growing on same tree including Ptychomnion aciculare and Hymenophyllum villosum.
Leaf consists of a large lobe and smaller and shorter ventral lobule attached to thedlobe along the margin to form a rounded ridge or carina. The free margin of the lobule in Cheilolejeunea usually curls inwards (deflexed) and is tightly rolled. In C. hamlinii, however, the free margin curves outward to lie flat against the inner lobe surface.
Cells of the genus have oil-bodies, differing in size, number and form and can be useful as supplementary information for identification. They are ephemeral and degenerate quickly. They need to be described, ideally photographed, quickly. Protologues for Cheilolejeunea historical collections lack reference to oil-bodies. In the original Colenso C. hamlinii, oil bodies had probably gone before they left NZ. The photographs of recent collections resemble these I took a few years ago but are of printable quality. The proposed epitype paper for C. hamlinii will include the photograph and a description.
The var. elliptica type material was collected at the Tahora Scenic Reserve (the type of C. hamlinii var elliptic [elliptica]) together with two scant collections inMangapapa Strea, possibly part of the Tangarakau Forest.
The main difference between the two varieties is in the form of the perianths, that in the Climie variety (var. hamlinii) is truncate while the other variety has an elliptical profile.
This collection included at least two good gynoecial shoots suitable for SEM dorsal and ventral views some are well off for what is needed for the proposed epitype.
