Dune; Flat; Hollow; Peat; Reed; Sand; Unconsolidated; Wet
Notes:
Local; FlowerSpikelets purple-red. Plants with tubers. Same location as CHR 570508 - same species? Very difficult to remove rooted pieces from dense roots of the sedge, grasses and other plants, even in the soft peaty sand. If this were to be Cyperus congestus it should uproot easily, but the specimen does not fully match the description of C. rotundus in Flora NZ Vol.3 or some of the pictures I found on websites.
Observed species:
Phormium tenax
Typha
Carex sinclairii
Dactylis glomerata
Schedonorus arundinaceus
Specimen notes
Supplementary remarks:
I agree, this is not Cyperus rotundus because the rhizome is very thick (in C. rotundus the rhizome are very slender and have tubers). The glumes are a good match of C. congestus. But I agree with Colin, the short-creeping rhizome is uncharacteristic for C. congestus. Another very similar species is a possibility.
